Prison Criminal Justice and Watchdog

Transgender Community Coalition stands in solidarity with those in the jail or prison system and is a firm watchdog for Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) compliance.  We believe that prison is an opportunity to rehabilitate oneself and all people, including those in prison, deserve lives to be free from violence and also live authentically while incarcerated.   Transgender, Intersex and Gender Nonconforming people have one of the highest levels of violence and rape in prison. They are extremely vulnerable when incarcerated, experiencing harassment and danger throughout the system.  Their lives are often in serious jeopardy.

We are a strong supporter that Transgender women, should be incarcerated with women to prevent the inordinate amount of prison rape and sexual abuse by male prisoners.

We respond to hundreds of letters from LGBT inmates, asking for medication information, to locating their families, sexual assault, correctional assault, and finding shelters for release etc.

We work closely with offenders once released to find them gainful employment, so they do not have to engage in shadow and sex work as employment.

We receive hundreds of letters a year asking for help.
